MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—The Ohio State University at Marion plans to conduct a controlled prairie burn at the Larry R. Yoder Prairie Nature Center on Saturday, Oct. 11, weather permitting.

The prescribed burn is a carefully planned and professionally managed fire used to restore and maintain healthy ecosystems, according to campus prairie officials. The burn helps reduce invasive species, promote native plant growth, and support local biodiversity.

“We encourage you to be aware of this important land care effort—and to join us in celebrating how our campus contributes to environmental stewardship and sustainability,” said Ohio State Marion Dean and Director Dr. Jennifer Schlueter. “This is a meaningful opportunity to witness science in action and support the health of our shared environment.”

The burn is considered an essential tool in sustainable land management. By conducting it safely and strategically, the university helps preserve the campus’s natural areas for research, education, and future generations.

Campus neighbors and traffic near campus may see smoke and activity from trained professionals on site. The burn will take place in specific, clearly marked areas of campus. Nearby residents should be assured that all appropriate safety measures will be in place throughout the day.
