CARDINGTON, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—A Cardington family received a gift of joy and normalcy on Friday, Sept. 12, as Cornerstone Building Brands and Roc Solid Foundation installed a custom backyard playset for their 1-year-old daughter, Aurora Schreiber, who is battling cancer.
Aurora, who is undergoing treatment for Medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor, at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, was surprised with the new playset alongside her two older brothers, Lucas, 2, and Joseph, 6. The gift provides a safe and private space for the siblings to play, as Aurora’s compromised immune system prevents her from safely using public playgrounds.
The playset was built and donated by Cornerstone Building Brands volunteers from the company’s Marion production facility, as part of a multi-build program with the Roc Solid Foundation.
This initiative is the largest partnership of its kind in the Roc Solid Foundation’s 16-year history, with Cornerstone Building Brands committing to build and donate 16 playsets in 15 communities across the United States. The project launched in September during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
“Cornerstone Building Brands is proud to support Roc Solid Foundation’s mission to build hope through the power of play,” said Gunner Smith, CEO of Cornerstone Building Brands. “We take pride in manufacturing windows, doors, roofs, and walls for homes across our communities, and we’re honored that our Aperture Solutions – Silver Line Windows and Doors team can help transform homes into places of comfort and joy for children like Aurora and her family, who need it most.”
Eric Newman, a childhood cancer survivor and founder of Roc Solid Foundation, expressed excitement for the partnership. “We are thrilled about the partnership with Cornerstone Building Brands, which is helping us reach more families fighting pediatric cancer than ever before,” Newman said. “When kids are playing, cancer is the last thing on their minds.”
The local effort is part of Cornerstone Building Brands’ “Connecting Communities” program, which empowers employees to give back to their neighborhoods. The company, which is headquartered in Cary, N.C., employs approximately 448 people in the Marion area at its Aperture Solutions facility.
