MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—Harding High School is welcoming a large freshman class this year, and the principal is energized—not just by the numbers, but by the momentum building across the district.
“We’ve moved up to a three-star district, and our high school is also a three-star school,” Harding Principal Todd Schneider says. “But what really excites me is the range of opportunities our students have. We offer agriculture, business, logistics, JROTC, welding, construction, athletic training, and STEM courses. We even have College Credit Plus instructors who are part of our staff. Combine all that with our incredible students and staff, and the sky is the limit.”
The focus this year is momentum. “Our culture is changing, it’s positive, and there’s so much amazing work happening not just here, but across the district,” the principal adds, highlighting how this positive shift influences every aspect of student life.
That momentum extends beyond the classroom. The school is expanding hands-on opportunities, including internships that place students in real-world work environments. “We want our students out in the community, building relationships and gaining experience. It’s about helping them find their ‘why’—whether that leads to college, enlistment, employment, or entrepreneurship,” the principal explains. These experiences connect academic learning to practical skills and future success.
For staff, the principal stresses the importance of remembering their impact. “Every student is everything to somebody. Educating, guiding, and protecting our youth is both a privilege and a duty.” Keeping this in mind allows educators to stay grounded in their purpose while inspiring students to reach their full potential.
Reflecting on personal back-to-school memories, the principal shares, “Being at Harding has always been a dream of mine. I think about my own high school principal, Michael Creary, who inspired me to become a principal. Seeing kids walk through the doors each year reminds me why we do what we do.” These experiences continue to shape the principal’s leadership style and the school’s positive culture.
For students, the advice is clear: “Take chances, challenge yourself, trust your teachers, and don’t be afraid to try new things. You’re only a kid once, and there’s a wide range of programs, classes, and activities to help you discover your passion—but you have to be willing to step out and explore.” With supportive staff and abundant opportunities, students are poised to make the most of their high school experience.
As Harding High School begins this school year, Principal Schneider’s message is clear: the school is on the rise, full of opportunities, and ready to harness its momentum to help students succeed in and beyond the classroom.
