MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—At McKinley Elementary School, Principal Angela Pace is leading an inspiring effort to create a welcoming, supportive, and engaging environment for students, staff, and the community.

One of the most exciting parts of this school year is seeing the community re-engage with the
school. Pre-COVID, parents and community members were in schools regularly, and McKinley
Elementary is bringing that connection back through a variety of programs and events designed
to celebrate students and involve families.

The Prexy of the Month program is a standout initiative. Every quarter, parents, local police
officers, firefighters, and other community members are invited to enjoy breakfast with
students and celebrate their achievements. This program not only recognizes individual
students but also strengthens the bond between the school and its community.

The school also brings community resources directly to families during events like parent–
teacher conferences and the annual Trunk or Treat. Local agencies set up informational booths,
allowing families to explore programs, services, and support available in the community. By
combining these resources with fun, engaging events, McKinley makes it easy for families to
connect with the help they need while celebrating school life with their children.

On the student recognition front, McKinley Elementary has expanded its Positive Behavioral
Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program. This year, a new book vending machine ties into the
school’s focus on kindness. Students who are recognized for positive behavior with “kindness
cards” can redeem them for books, creating a fun, tangible reward that encourages empathy,
generosity, and respect throughout the school.

“Our whole focus this year is around kindness,” Pace explained. “We want students to
understand that kindness is important every day, and it’s exciting to see them engage with it in
meaningful ways.”

Communication with families is another priority. Each week, Pace sends a newsletter outlining
upcoming events, ways parents can support their students, and highlights from the school
community. Volunteering opportunities, classroom support, and PTO involvement are all ways
families can participate and strengthen connections that help students thrive.
Beyond the classroom, McKinley Elementary encourages students to explore their passions. The
gardening club, for example, engages students in hydroponics and outdoor planting projects.

These activities teach valuable science and sustainability skills while producing plants that can
be shared with the community during the summer months.

Pace also offers guidance for both staff and students. For staff, she hopes they recognize the
impact of their hard work and dedication, and feel proud of the difference they make every
day. For students, she emphasizes the importance of remembering why they come to school: to
learn, grow, and develop the social skills that help them navigate life with kindness, empathy,
and self-advocacy.

With the school motto for the year, “Spread Kindness Like Confetti,” McKinley Elementary is
cultivating a culture of compassion, engagement, and community involvement. Through
creative programs, thoughtful initiatives, and dedicated staff, the school is demonstrating how
intentional support and encouragement can make a lasting difference in students’ lives.
