MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—The Ohio State University at Marion is inviting the community to a civil, scholarly discussion on a sensitive and timely legal issue as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear a closely watched case concerning the intersection of sex discrimination, women’s sports and transgender rights.
The next installment of the campus’s Buckeye Talks on Tap lecture series will feature Dr. Christopher Green, Professor of Law and Associate Director of the Ohio State Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society.
Dr. Green will present “What the Supreme Court Should Say About Sex Discrimination” on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 5:30 p.m. at Bucci’s Italian Scratch Kitchen, 320 W. Center St., Marion.
His presentation will offer constitutional and historical context to the ongoing national debate surrounding transgender athletes and women’s sports. Dr. Green’s work focuses on the Fourteenth Amendment, and he will explore how the amendment’s promise of equal citizenship informs contemporary legal arguments.
“Instead of relying on tiers of scrutiny, the Court should ground sex equality in the Fourteenth Amendment’s original promise of equal citizenship, which requires government to promote all citizens’ interests impartially: women’s interests as well as men’s, and the interests of citizens with gender dysphoria as much as the interests of others,” Green said.
The free event is open to all community members and is designed to create a space for open, respectful dialogue grounded in scholarship. Doors open at 5 p.m., with the lecture starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by a short question-and-answer session. Guests are welcome to purchase food or drinks during the program.
Dr. Green, whose scholarship has been cited four times by U.S. Supreme Court justices, is a graduate of Princeton, Yale Law School and the University of Notre Dame.
The Salmon P. Chase Center, established by the State of Ohio in 2023, is dedicated to researching and teaching the texts and ideas that shaped the American constitutional order.
