MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—For a few days in April, Marion will be filled with innovation, competition, and a whole lot of creativity.
From April 16–18, the Marion County Fairgrounds will host the National Robotics Challenge, bringing students and teams from across the country together to compete and showcase their skills.
Held inside the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the event runs throughout the day Thursday through Saturday, with competitions and activities taking place across multiple robotics challenges.
The competition has deep roots. It began in 1986 as a robotics and engineering challenge through the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. When sponsorship ended in the early 2000s, it could have disappeared, but three Marion educators saw an opportunity to keep it going. In 2004, the National Robotics Challenge was launched right here in the community.
What started small has grown into one of the premier robotics competitions in the country. Students design, build, and test their robots, often making adjustments on the spot as they compete.

For those attending, it’s more than just watching, it’s seeing problem-solving and teamwork happen in real time.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students, and free for children under 5. A three-day pass is available for $15.
It’s a chance to see what the next generation is capable of, and a reminder that something that almost ended is now thriving right here in Marion.
