COLUMBUS, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—Following the severe storms that swept across Ohio a couple of weeks ago, Ursel J. McElroy, Director of the Ohio Department of Aging (ODA), is urging all Ohioans, particularly older adults, to be vigilant of scams related to home repairs.

“Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the storms overnight. With emergency response efforts still underway, our department is working closely with local partners to ensure continuity of services and to help keep older Ohioans safe,” said Director McElroy. “Unfortunately, the urgency caused by these types of events is attractive to scammers, who often target older adults. While older adults are becoming increasingly knowledgeable about scams in general, it’s crucial after an event like this to remind those affected to be aware of common scam tactics to protect themselves and their loved ones.”

In the aftermath of a severe weather event, contractors may go door-to-door in neighborhoods offering to repair affected residents’ homes. Projects may include repairing roof damage, clearing fallen trees, and more. These contractors may claim that they can begin the work immediately or that they have materials remaining from a previous job, pressuring residents into accepting their offer immediately or handing over insurance settlement checks. When a resident accepts their offer and pays them, they may never return, or they may complete the work with poor quality.

While many reputable businesses still go door-to-door to meet potential customers, residents should always be cautious about people who come to their home unexpectedly and should always feel empowered to ask questions. If someone unknown attempts to solicit business at your door, some tips include:

  • Ask for written information about the company’s services
  • Check to see whether the company is properly licensed
  • Inform your insurance company about the offer
  • Request time to consider the offer – at least a day or two

If a contractor pushes a resident to decide immediately, the resident should refuse the offer, call local law enforcement, and report a potential scam.
