MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—April 24, 2024, marks the annual observance of Denim Day, a day where fashion becomes a powerful statement against sexual violence. Community members, elected officials, businesses, and students nationwide are donning their jeans in a visible protest against the misconceptions surrounding sexual violence.
This event is particularly significant as it takes place during April, recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The statistics are sobering: 1 out of 6 American women and 1 out of 33 American men have been victims of attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. Even more alarming is the fact that 8 out of 10 rapes are committed by someone known to the victim.
Denim Day is more than just a fashion statement. It’s a call to action for everyone to join in bringing awareness to sexual violence issues and supporting survivors. While donations are not expected, any contributions made will directly benefit local crime victims, providing much-needed resources and support.
Participants are encouraged to send pictures of themselves and their staff wearing denim to crittenour@co.marion.oh.us. These pictures will be shared on social media.
