Matthew Hudson McConnaughey “Mac”, Marion, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. He was 55 years old.Matthew was born in Columbus on March 5, 1969 to Daniel and Nan McConnaughey. He attended Fairview High School in Fairview, Pennsylvania. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Baldwin Wallace. After college, Matthew became a high school English teacher. Throughout his career he taught students at Garrett High School in Indiana, Elgin High School in Marion, and Upper Sandusky High School. He was a member of the VFW in Marion.
Matthew was a devoted son, brother, and uncle. He loved gardening, volleyball, his animals, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was quick-witted, kind, funny, and he lit up every room he walked into. He coached various volleyball teams through his lifetime. During his time as head coach in Upper Sandusky, he even took a team to the State Finals.Matthew is survived by his mother, Nan McConnaughey, his sister, Amanda (Gary) Crease, his nephews, Tyler (Emily Pike) Crease and Ewan McConnaughey, his nieces, Miranda (Trey) Swift, and Emma Crease, all from Ohio, and his dear cousins, Andy (Maggie) Fausnaugh, Florida, Connie “CC” (Bob) Hill, Tennessee, Julie Wisma, Ohio, and his three beautiful goddaughters: Josie, Skyla-Jolene, and EllaRae Woodford, all of Upper Sandusky. Although he had no biological children, he considered his students and players “his kids”. Matthew generously donated his organs and tissues upon his death.
A funeral service is scheduled on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at 1:00pm at Boyd Funeral Home, 122 W. Columbia St. Marion. Calling hours will be held before the service from 11:00am – 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pleasant Athletic Boosters-Volleyball Program, or Upper Sandusky High School Education Association going towards scholarship for students.
