William “Bill” E. Pickett, Sr., age 84, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2024 at Marion General Hospital.
On October 8, 1939 Bill was born in Waldo, Ohio, the son of the late Lester R. and Oma E. (Holcomb) Pickett. Bill received his education from Marion Harding High School and was part of the Class of 1958. Bill then went on to proudly served his country as a United States Marine from 1958 to 1963. After returning home, Bill married his soulmate, Margaret “Peg” (Jones) Pickett on March 28, 1964. Bill and Peg were able to spend fifty-eight marvelous years together before her passing on September 12, 2022.
Bill was a man who lived life to the fullest, finding immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. His greatest passions were playing golf and fishing, activities he cherished sharing with his children. Many memorable days were spent on the golf course and at the lake.
An avid sports enthusiast, William’s love for the game extended beyond playing. He was an exceptional fast pitch softball player and found great fulfillment in serving as an umpire for countless softball games. His keen eye and fair judgment made him a respected figure on the field. Bill’s love for sports continued as he never missed a game for The Ohio State Buckeyes Football Team, Cleveland Browns, and Cleveland Indians.
William’s dedication to his children was evident in his role as a coach for their baseball teams. He invested time, energy, and love into coaching, creating a legacy of teamwork and sportsmanship that his children will carry forward. Above all, William treasured the moments spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving sons: William (Stacy) Pickett Jr. and Phillip (Melissa) Pickett; daughters: Stephanie Griffaw and Shannon Miller; grandchildren: Brandon (Nichole) Pickett, Molly (Jeffrey) Topping, Logan Baker, Caitlin Pickett, Kirstin Pickett, Sienna Bihl, and Summer Hawkins; great-grandchildren: Aleahya Williams, Braylen Williams, Collins Pickett, Evy Topping, and Tripp Topping; brother: Larry (Marcia) Pickett and Carolyn Ballard; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brothers: Raymond Pickett and Norm Thrush; sisters: Donna Osborne and Shirley Gary.
Services will be held privately by the family.
