MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—Sixth Ward Marion City Council Member Bill Dichtl has submitted his resignation, effective Aug. 17, marking the fourth council departure in a remarkably turbulent year for local government.
Dichtl’s departure stems from a change in address that will move him outside Sixth Ward boundaries, violating the residency requirements necessary to hold the seat.
In a statement, Dichtl noted that the move was entirely unexpected.
“This wasn’t even on the radar,” Dichtl said. “It just happened fast and quick. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have taken the job. I don’t like leaving like that.”
Dichtl originally took office early this year following the resignation of former Sixth Ward Representative Ron Prater. In his official resignation letter, Dichtl expressed gratitude for his brief tenure on council.
“It has been an honor to represent Ward 6 and to work alongside dedicated colleagues and community members committed to strengthening our city,” Dichtl wrote. “Serving in this capacity has been an honor, and I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me.”
The vacancy leaves the Marion County Republican Party Central Committee tasked with selecting a Sixth Ward representative for the second time in 2026 alone.
Under local rules, the party committee has between 5 and 45 days to appoint a replacement.
Should the committee fail to fill the vacancy within that 45-day window, authority will transfer to Marion City Council to vote on an appointment.
Dichtl’s exit represents the fourth city council resignation this year, placing the Republican Party in the position of filling a vacancy for the fourth time since January.
