MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)— A complex drug-trafficking investigation has concluded with the sentencing of three individuals, following revelations that an inmate orchestrated a fentanyl distribution network from inside a prison cell.
The case, which centered on the activities of inmate Jose Lopez, began in June 2024 when detectives from the MARMET Drug Task Force intercepted and reviewed recorded prison phone calls. According to investigators, the recordings captured Lopez providing detailed instructions to Brandon Young and other associates regarding the acquisition, pricing, and distribution of illegal narcotics, as well as the management of drug proceeds.
The investigation culminated in raids on two residences in Marion County. At Young’s home, detectives reported seizing approximately 238.47 grams of a fentanyl-related compound, a firearm, multiple cellphones, cash, and drug-packaging materials. A secondary search linked to the operation uncovered $6,280 in cash, a handgun, and a 2017 Dodge Charger, which authorities determined was purchased with illicit funds.
The court proceedings resulted in the following sentences:
* Brandon Young: Convicted of two counts of trafficking in a fentanyl-related compound; sentenced to 14–17.5 years in prison.
* Jose Lopez: Convicted of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, complicity to trafficking in a fentanyl-related compound, and trafficking in a fentanyl-related compound; sentenced to 14–17.5 years in prison.
* Hailey Nagel: Convicted of attempted money laundering; sentenced to probation.
In addition to the prison terms, a judge ordered the forfeiture of the $6,280 in cash, the firearms, and the 2017 Dodge Charger seized during the investigation.
Prosecutors emphasized that the operation was uniquely brazen, as Lopez continued to oversee the criminal enterprise while already serving time for previous offenses.
