IBERIA, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)–Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton has taken the proactive step of releasing bodycam footage in response to allegations of abuse during a wellness check at an Iberia residence last weekend.
The incident, first reported by Marion County Now, involved deputies responding to the residence, where one of the occupants, Daniel Cross, 37, accused the deputies of causing him serious physical harm.
Following the incident, Cross underwent back surgery on Monday morning, prompting further scrutiny of the deputies’ actions. The bodycam footage, which has been redacted to protect the identities of minors and sensitive information, presents a different narrative than the one initially reported by the Cross family.
Sheriff Hinton addressed the situation in a statement to Marion County Now, acknowledging the troubling nature of the allegations and emphasizing the office’s commitment to investigating any potential wrongdoing by deputies. He announced that an external law enforcement agency would be conducting an investigation into the incident.
A deputy from the Morrow County Sheriff’s Department hand-delivered the footage to the office of Marion County Now on Thursday afternoon. Editor-In-Chief Randy Bigley prepared the footage for posting on Marion County Now.
The Cross family has enlisted the services of Marion Attorney JC Ratliff in response to the incident. Due to the graphic nature of the footage, viewers must be 18 years of age to access it. Marion County Now will continue to provide updates on this developing news story as more information becomes available.
