MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—Thomas Chafin, 62, of Marion has had his conviction in a child rape case upheld by the unanimous decision of the Court of Appeals.
The court’s ruling affirms the life sentence without parole for Chafin, who was found guilty of raping a 7-year-old girl.
Prosecutor Grogan expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, stating that it validates the strength of the case presented. Grogan assured the community that Chafin, a dangerous predator, will remain behind bars for life, ensuring the safety of innocent individuals.
The appellate court conducted a thorough review of the evidence presented during the trial and found no grounds for a miscarriage of justice or the need for a new trial.
This decision highlights the jury’s role in assessing witness credibility and evaluating the weight of the evidence, which ultimately led to Chafin’s conviction.
Grogan emphasized the commitment to protecting the community and bringing sex offenders to justice, particularly in cases involving crimes against vulnerable children. The ruling serves as a clear message that Marion County law enforcement will not falter in upholding the law and ensuring justice.
