WASHINGTON, DC (MARION COUNTY NOW)—The official nonpartisan organization established by Congress to lead the nation’s 250th anniversary launched a massive nationwide initiative today designed to make 2026 the largest year of volunteerism in U.S. history.
The program, titled “America Gives,” challenges businesses, schools, faith-based networks, and individuals to increase their measurable community impact starting immediately. The initiative is a cornerstone of America250’s efforts to mark the Semiquincentennial by focusing on the future of American civic engagement.
“America Gives embodies what our Semiquincentennial is all about — celebrating not only our nation’s past, but also its people and potential,” said Rosie Rios, Chair of America250.
The program was developed following research indicating that a majority of Americans want the 250th anniversary to include a rekindling of community service. The initiative is inspired by America250 National Co-Chairs, former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush.
To track the movement, America250 has launched a live national counter at America250.org/America-Gives. Participants can take a “Year of Service” pledge and log volunteer hours in real time across all 50 states, five territories, and Washington, D.C.
To incentivize participation, the organization announced the America Gives National Sweepstakes. Throughout the year, 250 randomly selected volunteers who log their hours will be given the opportunity to direct a $4,000 donation to an approved Founding Partner charity. In total, America250 expects to facilitate $1 million in donations through the program.
Major corporate and nonprofit partners have already pledged support, including Walmart, Coca-Cola, the American Red Cross, and United Way Worldwide. Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, will serve as the National Resource Partner to connect volunteers with local opportunities.
“America Gives reflects the very best of who we are as a nation: people who show up, take action, and create meaningful change together,” said Jennifer Sirangelo, CEO of Points of Light.
Individuals interested in finding local service opportunities or logging their hours can visit America250.org.
