MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—With a majority of Americans relying on prescription medications, The Ohio State University at Marion’s Buckeye Talks on Tap series will delve into the origins and evolution of drug development next month.
Ryan Yoder, an Ohio State Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, will present a free community lecture titled “The Evolution of Drug Design: From Remedies to Rationality” on Tuesday, July 8, at 5:30 p.m. at Bucci’s Italian Scratch Kitchen.
The presentation will explore the historical progression of drug design, from ancient remedies to contemporary therapies. Yoder will highlight the shift in drug discovery from accidental findings and traditional practices to more systematic, science-driven methods, examining how advancements in technology, research, and regulation have influenced the creation and testing of medicines.
Yoder earned his Ph.D. in organic/computational chemistry from The Ohio State University in 2013. He currently teaches organic chemistry and mentors undergraduate research at Ohio State Marion. His research focuses on drug design for cancer therapeutics, molecular modeling to combat toxic organophosphorus nerve agents, and chemical education.
Buckeye Talks on Tap, held the second Tuesday of each month at Bucci’s Italian Scratch Kitchen (320 W. Center St., Marion), is modeled after the international Science Cafe phenomenon. These events foster engaging conversations between academic and scientific experts and the community in a casual setting.
The lecture series brings Ohio State faculty and other community experts to share research and scholarly information on diverse and timely subjects, including the environment, astronomy, health, and local community development. The goal is to connect the campus and the community through open discussions on thought-provoking topics relevant to the Marion area.
Attendees are encouraged to eat, drink, and relax during the lecture. Doors open at 5 p.m. for food and drink orders, with the lecture beginning at 5:30 p.m. A question-and-answer session will follow at 6 p.m. Attendees will be entered to win a door prize from Marcie DeWitt of Anchor and Away Travel and a monthly drawing for a $500 tuition voucher to The Ohio State University at Marion.
