MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)The Marion County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD) is celebrating Developmental Disabilities (DD) Awareness Month throughout March, highlighting the achievements and contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities.

DD Awareness Month was first recognized in 1987 when President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation encouraging Americans to support individuals with developmental disabilities in leading productive lives. Since then, County Boards of DD and organizations nationwide have used March to celebrate progress and raise awareness about ongoing challenges.

MCBDD is inviting the Marion County community to participate by sharing stories on social media and wearing orange on March 4, 2025, to show support. “March is our favorite month,” said Cheryl Plaster, MCBDD superintendent. “We urge our community to wear orange to recognize those with developmental disabilities. Their insight, advocacy, and unique perspective help create an inclusive community.”

According to the CDC, developmental disabilities affect 1 in 6 children aged 3 to 17. Over 1.6 million Ohioans have some type of disability. MCBDD encourages the community to join the conversation on social media and celebrate the strengths of those they serve.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “This Is Me, More Than DD,” focusing on the character traits and successes of individuals with developmental disabilities. MCBDD manages and funds over 50 local service providers, offering support in areas such as transportation, day services, residential services, and employment.

MCBDD also challenges the community to engage with and learn about individuals with developmental disabilities, volunteer for the Special Olympics, and support inclusive initiatives. For more information, visit MCBDD’s social media platforms or their website.
