MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—The City of Marion Civil Service Commission has announced an opening for the position of Firefighter. Applicants must be 18 years old on or by February 18th, 2025, but cannot have reached the age of 41.
No prior training is required, as the Marion Fire Department (MFD) will provide training and pay employees to attend. Bonus points are available to applicants who possess any of the following:
- An active Ohio Professional Firefighter (240hr) certification.
- An active Ohio Paramedic certification.
- Prior or current service in the US Military.
- Residency in Marion County.
Hired applicants can expect to work in a fast-paced and busy urban Fire Department. The Marion Fire Department responds to over 8,000 calls a year between three stations, with daily staffing consisting of two engines, one ladder, three ALS ambulances, and one command car, totaling between 13 and 18 personnel. MFD responds to roughly 75 working structure fires annually.
Members of the MFD are represented by the Marion Firefighters Local 379, with the current collective bargaining agreement providing very competitive wages and benefits. Members work a schedule of 24 hours on, 48 hours off, with a Kelly day every three weeks, resulting in a 48-hour work week.
A five-year Firefighter/Paramedic can expect an annual wage of $80,745.60, including five weeks of holiday/vacation time. Compensatory time and sick leave are also earned. Candidates can also expect overtime and promotional opportunities.
The Marion Fire Department offers a Lateral Transfer program where a full-time Firefighter/Paramedic may bring their years of service with them for the purposes of salary and time off, allowing qualified candidates to utilize their experience and skills within the department.
