Clarence “Smokey” L. Shiley Jr., age 69, passed away after a short battle with cancer, on Monday, November 20, 2023, at the James Cancer Center in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by his closest family, his sister Sharon, his son Josh and his wife Ashley, and his grandchildren Lily and James.

Clarence was born on January 14, 1954, in Tiffin, Ohio, to his parents Clarence L. Shiley Sr., and Tarsa (Farrell) Shiley, and they preceded him in death.

Clarence is survived by his son Josh (Ashley) Shiley of Fredericksburg, Virginia, his 2 grandchildren Lily and James, and his sister Sharon (Scott Spangler) Roush of Nevada, Ohio.

A native of Burgoon, Smokey served his country in the United States Navy. In a career that spanned over 25 years, he served numerous tours including assignments to four ships and two overseas stations.  After travelling the world numerous times, he retired honorably at the rank of Chief Petty Officer.  Upon military retirement, he continued to serve his country another 18 years as a civil servant with the United States Coast Guard.

He resided for many years in Chesapeake, Virginia and recently returned to Ohio to be closer to family.

He will forever be remembered by those closest to him as “Chief” and “Papa.”

A memorial service for Clarence will be announced at a later date.
