MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—A fatal crash involving a horse-drawn carriage and a CSX locomotive is currently under investigation by troopers from the Marion Post. The incident occurred on June 19, 2024, at approximately 4:40 PM, on County Road 5 in Marion County.

Edward Gingerich, a 14-year-old resident of Marion, was operating the horse-drawn carriage at the time of the accident. Preliminary investigations indicate that Gingerich was traveling northbound on County Road 5 when he lost control of the carriage. The locomotive, traveling eastbound, was struck on its side by the carriage.

Gingerich was ejected from the carriage upon impact and was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was transported from the scene by the Marion County Coroner’s Office to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Scioto Valley Fire and EMS, CSX rail company, and the Marion County Coroner’s Office.

The circumstances leading to the tragic accident remain under investigation.
