MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—On Tuesday, October 15, at 1:30 PM., FBI Special Agent Jacob Hollister will be at Kingston Residence of Marion to discuss the pressing issue of elder and senior fraud. Each year, millions of elderly Americans fall victim to financial fraud and scams.
Criminals often gain their targets’ trust and communicate with them directly online, over the phone, and through the mail. Once successful, scammers frequently continue their schemes due to the potential for significant financial gain. Seniors are particularly targeted because they tend to be trusting and polite, often have financial savings, own a home, and have good credit—all of which make them attractive to scammers.
Additionally, seniors may be less inclined to report fraud due to a lack of knowledge on how to report it or feelings of shame. They might also worry that their relatives will lose confidence in their ability to manage their financial affairs. When elderly victims do report a crime, they may struggle to provide detailed information to investigators. With the elderly population growing and seniors losing more than $3 billion annually to fraud, elder fraud remains a significant and growing problem.
The public is invited to attend this free event. To register, call Kingston at (740) 389-2311. Kingston is located at 464 James Way, Marion.
