MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—At 31 years old, Sean Sullivan is living a life filled with purpose, pride, and connection. Born with developmental disabilities, Sean has faced challenges that many never will—but he’s never let those challenges define him. Today, he works successfully at Goodwill in Marion, Ohio, where he’s not just an employee—he’s a valued team member, a friend, and a symbol of what’s possible when community, opportunity, and heart come together.
Sean’s journey to employment was supported by the Marion County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD), and Goodwill. With guidance, support, and encouragement, Sean found his place at Goodwill—a place where he thrives. Lead Employment Specialist, and Sean’s Job Coach, Sherry Stapleton, is known for her compassionate leadership and her unwavering belief in the strengths of every individual. She sees potential where others might see limitations, and she’s built a workplace where people like Sean are empowered to shine.
“When I met Sean, I knew he could do anything he wanted to. I just had to make him believe in himself. He has always had the drive, desire, and the want to work attitude. He’s a great employee. We all love him,” Sherry said enthusiastically. “He’s come a long way and we are all very proud of him,” she added.
Sean loves his job. He lights up when he talks about the variety of tasks he gets to do and the movement that keeps his days interesting. “I like that I get to do different things,” he says with a smile. “And the people I work with… they’re kinda like family.” That sense of belonging means everything to Sean—and to his family.
His mother, Roxanne, is deeply grateful for the role Goodwill plays in Sean’s life. “It gives him meaning,” she says. “It’s a foundation for independence.” Like many parents of children with disabilities, Roxanne carries a quiet worry about the future—about what will happen when she and her husband, Kirk, are no longer there to support Sean. But she finds comfort in knowing that Sean is building a life of his own, surrounded by people who care. She has ideas and plans—friends and family who will step in when needed—but knowing Sean has a strong foundation at Goodwill eases her heart.
Roxanne goes on to say that Sean’s journey hasn’t always been easy. She is thankful for the Marion County Board of Developmental Disabilities that have helped their family along the way. Most recently, they provide transportation so Sean can get back and forth to Goodwill.
Sean said, “I love my drivers from Wings of an Angel. But I do hope to maybe get my own driver’s license one day.”
Sean’s story is one of resilience, love, and community. It’s a reminder that with the right support, people with developmental disabilities can lead fulfilling, independent lives. It’s also a tribute to the organizations and individuals—like the Marion County Board of Developmental Disabilities, OOD, and Goodwill—who make that possible every day.
