WASHINGTON (MARION COUNTY NOW) – Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) joined the Keep SNAP Funded Act of 2025. This bill would provide for full funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during the government shutdown.

“About 1.4 million Ohioans rely on SNAP to put food on the table. Ohio families shouldn’t pay the price for Washington’s political games. I will continue to vote to reopen the government, and I urge my Senate Democratic colleagues to do the same. But for now, we cannot allow millions of innocent Americans to go without the benefits they rely on,” said Husted.

The Keep SNAP Funded Act would appropriate the necessary funding to provide uninterrupted SNAP benefits, retroactive to the start of the shutdown.

Background:

SNAP provides food benefits to low-income families to help them afford groceries.

Due to the government shutdown, funding for SNAP is expected to run out on Nov. 1, and the program’s contingency fund cannot legally cover benefits without an appropriation. Outside of reopening the government, congressional legislation remains the only way to guarantee that all scheduled SNAP payments are made.

Husted wrote a letter to the Financial Clerk of the Senate asking to withhold his own salary for the duration of the shutdown.

Husted is also supporting the Pay Our Military Act. This bill would pay U.S. military personnel throughout the shutdown.
