MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—Kaitlyn Morales, a defendant in multiple drug-related cases, changed her plea to guilty on Friday, August 4th, before Marion Common Pleas Court Judge W.T. Edwards. The charges included possession of a fentanyl-related compound, tampering with evidence, and possession of cocaine.
The severity of the charges against Morales varied. The possession of a fentanyl-related compound, a first-degree felony, carries a potential 12-year prison sentence. Tampering with evidence and possession of cocaine were classified as third and fifth-degree felonies, respectively, each with their own potential prison terms.
As part of a negotiated plea agreement, Morales agreed to testify against her co-defendant. However, despite her agreement, the state decided to dismiss the most serious offense. This decision raised concerns during the court proceedings, with Judge Edwards questioning the validity of Morales’ testimony and the state’s choice to drop the charge, given her dishonest testimony and inconsistency with her previous assertions to the state.
Assistant Prosecutor Chuck Hall confirmed the state’s decision during the hearing. In response, Judge Edwards emphasized that he is not bound by the attorneys’ recommendations. He ordered Morales to undergo a pre-sentence investigation.
The sentencing for Kaitlyn Morales is scheduled for Friday, April 26th, at 8:30 am in the Marion County Common Pleas Court.
