MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—For many families facing a serious medical diagnosis, the terms “palliative care” and “hospice” can spark anxiety and confusion. To help dispel common myths and provide clarity, Kingston Residence of Marion will host an informational session on the realities of comfort-focused medical care.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at the Kingston Residence facility located at 464 James Way in Marion.

Marla Gerrek, a nurse practitioner specializing in palliative and hospice care with Amedisys, will be the featured speaker. The discussion is designed to empower individuals and families to make informed healthcare decisions by highlighting the distinct roles of each service.

“Misunderstandings can lead to unnecessary worry at a time when clarity and support matter most,” organizers said in a statement.

The session will define palliative care as comfort-based support that can be provided at any stage of a serious illness, even while patients continue curative medical treatments. In contrast, hospice care is focused on providing dignity and support for those nearing the end of life, often spanning several months rather than just the final days.

The event is free and open to the public, but attendees are asked to RSVP by calling Kingston Residence of Marion at (740) 389-2311.
