MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) has issued a warning to residents about a phone scam involving fake warrants. The scammer, who speaks with a southern accent, falsely claims to be a Lieutenant from the MCSO.

The scam came to light when a concerned citizen contacted the MCSO after receiving a call from the alleged Lieutenant. The caller informed the citizen that they had outstanding warrants and needed to go to the courthouse to resolve them. The scammer even spoofed the MCSO’s business number on the citizen’s caller ID to appear legitimate.

This type of scam is not uncommon and often leads to victims paying money to the caller to take care of non-existent warrants. The MCSO wants to make it clear that they will never contact someone by telephone to demand money for bond or payment for warrants.

If you receive any suspicious calls of this nature, the MCSO urges you to report them immediately to the Sheriff’s Office at 740-382-8244. Stay vigilant and protect yourself from falling victim to such scams.
