MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—Marion police are advising citizens to exercise caution regarding information shared from a new mobile application, “Crime Radar,” stating that the app frequently provides false or misleading details based on police radio traffic.

The app, which appears to monitor scanner frequencies and use artificial intelligence to generate “breaking news”-style articles, has been found to interpret radio transmissions inaccurately, according to a statement from law enforcement officials.

The warning comes after the department received reports of content being shared on social media that misinterpreted a recent call for service.

“Our officers did respond to a report of shots fired tonight on Bennett Street,” the department confirmed. “The area was checked by car and on foot, and it was unfounded. No one was shot, no one was injured, and no evidence of a shooting was found.”

While the department appreciates the community’s desire to stay informed and safe, officials urge residents to be mindful of the source of the information.

“We do ask, however, that you be mindful that information on these apps may be inaccurate and caution you that posting this information may cause unnecessary panic,” the statement read.

Authorities encourage citizens to rely on official channels, trusted local news sources, and direct communication from the police department for accurate, verified safety information.
