The identity of the Morrow County Sheriff’s Deputy killed in the line of action has been released.
Daniel Weston Sherrer, 31, died on Memorial Day Weekend when he responded to a domestic disturbance. Sherrer joined the department in 2021.
In an emotional news conference this morning Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton refused to speak the name of the suspect in the shooting telling reporters they’d have to get the information from officials in Delaware county who are handling the investigation at Hinton’s request. “You’ll never hear his name from my mouth.”Hinton told reporters.
Calling Sherrer a “Godsend” to his department and the county, Hinton went on to say:
“The guy was never in a bad mood, (he) always had a smile on his face. He would go out his way to see how your day was and crack a joke and (he) was just a great guy. He will be missed,”

MORROW COUNTY, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—A deadly shooting occurred Monday evening when a Morrow County Sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed while responding to a domestic situation, according to Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton.
The incident happened in the 100 block of County Road 26 in Marengo, where law enforcement was dispatched following reports of a disturbance. Upon their arrival, gunfire erupted, resulting in the deputy sustaining critical injuries.
Sheriff Hinton reported that the deputy was immediately transported to a local hospital but succumbed to the injuries shortly after. The suspect involved in the shooting was also wounded and taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Details surrounding the circumstances leading up to the shooting are still unclear, and the investigation is being led by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, with support from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
“This is a heartbreaking day for our office and our community,” Sheriff Hinton expressed during a brief press conference early Tuesday morning.
