MORROW COUNTY, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—As the first anniversary of the tragic shooting of Morrow County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Weston Sherrer approaches, the Morrow County Prosecutor’s Office has officially withdrawn its pursuit of the death penalty against the man accused of killing him.
Deputy Sherrer, 31, lost his life last Memorial Day Weekend while responding to a domestic disturbance in the 100 block of County Road 26 in Marengo. Upon arrival, law enforcement was met with gunfire, resulting in Deputy Sherrer suffering fatal injuries.
The accused, Brian Michael Wilson, has pleaded not guilty to murder charges. Initially, following Deputy Sherrer’s death, Morrow County Prosecutor Andrew Wick had emphasized the need for the maximum penalties for crimes against law enforcement, including the death penalty.
However, recent developments have led the State to file a motion to dismiss the aggravating specifications associated with Wilson’s indictment—components that would render the case eligible for capital punishment. Concurrently, the State has presented a Plea Agreement and Jointly Recommended Sentencing Agreement, which has been approved by Deputy Sherrer’s family.
Wilson is scheduled for sentencing on May 26,
Marion County Now will continue follow this developing story.
