NEW BLOOMINGTON, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—On March 4, 2025, Humane Agent Scott Mills of the Marion County Dog Warden’s Office responded to the 6000 block of Marion Agosta Road regarding a report of a deceased dog. Upon arrival, Agent Mills recovered the dog’s body, which was subsequently sent for a necropsy.
Following a three-week investigation, Agent Mills, along with Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and members of the Marion Area Humane Society, executed a search warrant at the residence on March 25, 2025. During the search, authorities seized nine dogs of varying breeds, an aquatic turtle, and a leopard gecko.
At the investigation’s conclusion, Whitney Moore and Brandon Johnson, both of New Bloomington, were charged with 64 counts related to Prohibitions Concerning Companion Animals. The charges include four fifth-degree felonies, 20 first-degree misdemeanors, and 40 second-degree misdemeanors.
Three of the seized dogs were surrendered and are currently available for adoption at the Marion County Dog Pound. The remaining rescued animals are being held pending the outcome of the court cases.
Sheriff Matt Bayles recognized the efforts of Humane Agent Mills and the deputies involved.
“The conditions these poor animals were living in were completely unacceptable,” Sheriff Bayles stated. “We will always work tirelessly to protect those who cannot protect themselves and bring those to justice that choose to treat other living creatures with such incredible disregard for their welfare.”
Sheriff Bayles also extended a special thank you to the Marion Area Humane Society, Pet Supplies Plus, Petco, and community members for their assistance in the rescue and for donating items needed to care for the seized reptiles.
