COLUMBUS, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—On Tuesday, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine officially signed Ohio House Bill 492 into law, introducing new identification requirements for drivers and passengers during traffic stops.

The legislation mandates that all occupants of a motor vehicle must disclose their name, address, and date of birth to a peace officer when requested during a traffic stop. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in a fourth-degree misdemeanor charge.

In addition to the identification mandate, House Bill 492 also increases the penalties for obstructing a motor-vehicle-related arrest, elevating the offense to a second-degree misdemeanor.

Notably, the law specifies that individuals are not required to answer any questions beyond providing their identifying information.
