MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—The Ohio State University at Marion’s Buckeye Talks on Tap lecture series will feature a discussion on Lake Erie and harmful algal blooms with Dr. Christopher Winslow, director of Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory.

The lecture, titled “The State of Lake Erie: Nutrients and Harmful Algal Blooms,” will be held Tuesday, June 10, at 5:30 p.m. at Bucci’s Italian Scratch Kitchen, located on The Dock at 320 W. Center St. in Marion. Doors open at 5 p.m. for attendees wishing to order food and drinks.

Lake Erie is a critical resource for Ohio, impacting the state’s economy, transportation, recreation, and serving as a drinking water source for millions. Dr. Winslow’s presentation will offer a high-level overview of current nutrient sources in Lake Erie, the understanding of agricultural nutrient losses, best management practices, farmer decisions, potential strategies for a 40% phosphorus reduction, existing information gaps, and ongoing research needs.

Dr. Winslow coordinates Ohio Sea Grant and Ohio State’s Stone Lab Lake Erie research, education, and outreach efforts in collaboration with state and federal agencies and universities. He holds master’s and doctorate degrees from Bowling Green State University and a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University. Before joining Ohio State, he was an instructor at Bowling Green State University and an assistant professor at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.

Buckeye Talks on Tap is modeled after the Science Cafe concept, aiming to create engaging conversations between academic experts and the community in informal settings. The series, held on the second Tuesday of each month at Bucci’s, features Ohio State faculty and other experts discussing timely topics such as the environment, astronomy, health, and more, with the goal of connecting the campus and the Marion community.

Attendees are encouraged to dine and relax during the lecture, which begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session at 6 p.m. Those attending the May event will have the chance to win a door prize from Anchor and Away Travel.
