MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—The City of Marion is inviting the public to join honored veterans, their families, and friends for “Stand By Your Banner” events on Saturday, May 24, and Saturday, June 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
These events coincide with the annual display of the Marion County Military Veterans Banners, which adorn utility poles throughout the city from Memorial Day weekend in May through Veterans Day in November. Over 600 banners recognizing local veterans will be showcased.
The “Stand By Your Banner” gatherings offer an opportunity for the community to wave and cheer in support of those being celebrated. The events are scheduled on the weekends leading into Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.
The public is encouraged to tour the city’s banner-lined streets. Suggested routes include:
- Mt. Vernon Ave (Rt 95) from US 23 to downtown
- E. Center St from US 23 to downtown
- The “Shoot the Loop” oval route around downtown (Center St & Church St)
- Oak St (beside the County Administration Bldg.)
- S. Main St to Delaware Ave, then loop around McKinley Park Blvd by Veterans Park & continue on Delaware Ave (turn around at Barks Rd & head back toward downtown)
- S. State St (one-way heading north from Delaware Ave to downtown)
- N. Main St. from downtown to Stewart’s Root Beer Drive-In
- S. Prospect St (one-way heading south) through the merge left into Walnut St to Delaware Ave
- Bellefontaine Ave (Rt 739) from S. Prospect St. to the railroad tracks
