MOUNT GILEAD, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—Several races were decided in the Morrow County primary election Tuesday.

  • The Morrow County prosecutor’s race was a rematch of the 2020 contest between incumbent Tom Smith and challenger Andy Wick. This time Wick prevailed, 2,867-2,648.

Smith was previously an assistant prosecutor before takaing the position over three years ago. Wick, in his third time running for the office, moved from being a private practice attorney to assistant prosecutor for Richland and Licking counties.

  • Tim Siegfried retained his county commissioner position with 2,968 votes to Christopher Sherbourne’s 1,931.

Siegfried is the former mayor of Marengo, while Sherbourne has served on Mount Gilead village council for more than eight years.

  • Tim Abraham ran unopposed for the other county commissioners seat that was on the ballot, garnering 4,360 votes.
  • In the race for county recorder five names appeared on the ballot: Jennifer Kimmey, Jerry Newell, Cathie Robinson, Brandon Strain, and Dawn Vanderkooi.

Strain got 1,210 votes to win the seat, topping Kimmey 1,180, Vanderkooi 1,107, Robinson 963 and Newell 746. Strain has been employed at the Morrow County Engineer’s Office for more than 20 years.

  • County Engineer Bart Dennison and Sheriff John Hinton both ran unopposed. The same is true for Morrow County Court of Common Pleas Judge Rob Hickson, who will get another term on the bench, and County Treasurer Jim Jahn.

Hinton got 4,870 votes, Dennison 4,402 and Hickson 4,192. Jahn received 4,462 complimentary votes.

  • Morrow County’s OSU Extension Services sought a 0.5-mill property tax levy to be renewed for another five years, but it was defeated 3,711-3652.
  • Village of Cardington passed a tax levy renewal 174-164.
  • Mount Gilead income tax renewal failed 1,139-852 and a tax levy renewal also lost 3,711-3,652.
  • A total of 7,454 votes were cast, for a voter turnout of 29.6%. Republicans outnumbered Democrats, 6,258 to 1,012, with 184 non-partisan ballots in the 33 precincts.
