MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—Pillar Credit Union, founded in Marion in 1960, is celebrating its 65th anniversary with initiatives that highlight its commitment to the local community, according to Stephen Adams, the credit union’s head of marketing. Adams recently joined Randy Bigley on the Marion Community Spotlight podcast to discuss Pillar’s ongoing efforts.

“We were founded here in Marion in 1960… we’re celebrating our 65th year here,” Adams said, emphasizing the credit union’s deep local roots. He contrasted Pillar with national banks, stating, “They can’t do what you guys do and won’t do what you guys… Absolutely. And that’s where we step in.”

As part of their anniversary celebrations, Pillar has been giving away VIP tickets to various events nationwide to some of its members. “We can’t do something for all 10,000 of our members, but being able to do something unique versus what some of the other institutions are doing… I think that’s where that’s where we get the opportunity to shine,” Adams explained. The VIP ticket initiative allows members to choose events they wish to attend, offering a personalized experience.

Adams also highlighted Pillar’s cooperative structure and its focus on reinvesting in the community. “Our members are our owners, which is great. So you are we are a cooperative. So together as a community, we’re cooperating and pulling our money and our resources together. And that’s how we’re able to invest in the local organizations. Schools, kids, programs and so much more.” He emphasized that Pillar aims to fill the gaps left by larger banks in supporting local initiatives.

Pillar’s community involvement extends to numerous organizations annually through financial support, resources, and volunteerism. Adams noted the growing trend of local businesses and community members joining Pillar, recognizing that their banking activities directly contribute to local investment.

The credit union has also expanded its reach, recently opening a second location in Mount Gilead in Morrow County. Adams mentioned that Pillar now serves six counties and is committed to ensuring local financial institutions remain a presence in rural areas.

Looking ahead, Pillar is expanding its marketing department to include a community engagement manager to deepen its relationships with local organizations.
