MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—The Marion County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD) has launched a robust calendar of community events for the new year, ranging from specialized support groups to large-scale inclusive celebrations.

During a recent appearance on the Community Spotlight podcast, MCBDD representative Nikki Workman highlighted several urgent opportunities for local families, starting with the Family Support Group. Held on the second Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. at the Explore-It-Torium, the group offers a shared space for parents and family members to connect. The next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 8.

“We feed you so you won’t have to cook, and you can bring the siblings and your spouse,” Workman said, noting that childcare is provided to ensure parents can focus on peer support and resource sharing.

The board is also continuing its “Sibshops” program, specifically designed for siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities. The monthly Saturday meetings provide a therapeutic yet fun outlet for children to discuss their unique experiences. The next session will be held Jan. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Marion Union Station.

Looking ahead, the agency is preparing for its premier annual event, the Golden Gala, set for Friday, March 6, 2026, at Tri-Rivers Career Center. The inclusive prom-style event, now in its sixth year, relies on hundreds of community volunteers and sponsors, including premier partner OhioHealth.

“It’s a huge party for the whole community, but we focus heavily on the people we serve,” Workman said. “We want to make sure they have the time of their life.”
