MT. GILEAD, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—On Tuesday, Brian Wilson, the individual responsible for the murder of Deputy Weston Sherrer was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, along with an additional 27 to 32.5 years for his actions that took place one year ago today.

The courtroom, along with two overflow areas, was filled with law enforcement personnel, friends, and family members of Deputy Sherrer.

Representing the State of Ohio during the sentencing were Prosecutor Andrew Wick and Assistant Prosecutor Earl Desmond, accompanied by lead detectives Det. Bender and Det. Flahive from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.

Following the sentencing, Prosecutor Wick issued a statement reflecting on the case and its impact on the community.

“Today marks the conclusion of one of the most painful chapters in the history of Morrow County,” he stated. “The Defendant has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole and an additional 27 to 32.5 years for his crimes, including the murder of Morrow County Deputy Weston Sherrer.”

Wick elaborated on the decision-making process that led to the sentencing, noting that the pursuit of the death penalty was considered but ultimately not pursued. “This was a difficult and deeply emotional decision, made with the intent of providing certainty, closure, and finality for Deputy Sherrer’s loved ones and the grieving Morrow County community.”

He emphasized Deputy Sherrer’s noble intentions at the time of the incident, highlighting that he was trying to save a life. “That act reflected the very best of law enforcement and the character of a man devoted to protecting others, even in perilous situations,” Wick remarked.

The families of Deputy Sherrer and Lyon have shown remarkable strength throughout this ordeal. Wick expressed gratitude for their trust in the Prosecutor’s Office and urged the community to continue respecting their privacy as they begin to heal.

He also acknowledged the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office for their dedication and professionalism throughout the investigation. “Sheriff John Hinton’s unwavering leadership has made our community stronger in the wake of this tragedy,” he stated.

In recognition of the efforts made by the Morrow County Prosecutor’s Office, Wick commended the staff for their hard work and commitment in the pursuit of justice. Special mention was given to Director of Victim Services Richelle Ettel for her extraordinary dedication to supporting those affected by Deputy Sherrer’s loss.

“While no sentence can reverse the harm caused or bring Deputy Weston Sherrer back to his loved ones, today’s ruling ensures that the Defendant will no longer pose a threat to our community,” Wick concluded. “We honor Deputy Sherrer’s life, service, and sacrifice, and remain steadfast in our support of the families and community he served so faithfully.”

In memory of Deputy Weston Sherrer, the community is encouraged to reflect on his legacy and strive to embody the values he represented.
