MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—Dr. Tracy Tylka will present her latest research findings in a talk titled Looking Back at Your Former Appearance, as part of the Buckeye Talks on Tap community lecture series, Tuesday, November 17, 5:30 p.m. at Bucci’s Italian Scratch Kitchen.

Ohio State Marion Professor of Psychology, Dr. Tracy Tylka, one of the world’s foremost authorities on body image, will share information on her recent study which found that people often judge themselves by comparing their current appearance to earlier versions of themselves, a behavior researchers call self-oriented comparison. The study showed that looking back at a time when you felt more attractive is linked to body shame, rumination, and disordered eating, while comparing yourself to a less favorable past appearance is related to higher body appreciation and pride. These research findings could help improve body image treatment and support people navigating aging and other appearance-related changes.

Buckeye Talks on Tap aims to bring university research into everyday spaces, offering conversations that are lively, accessible, and grounded in real‑world relevance. The event will take place at Bucci’s Italian Scratch Kitchen inside Passenger & Rail Co., 320 W. Center St., Marion. Doors open at 5 p.m., with the talks beginning at 5:30 p.m. and followed by a short Q & A. Guests are welcome to enjoy dinner or drinks during the program.

Ohio State Marion invites the community to join this evening of discovery, connection, and shared learning — a chance to see how local students are contributing to global scientific conversations and how their work may shape the future of health and medicine.
