MARION, OH (MARION COUNTY NOW)—As the season of giving approaches, Ohio State Marion sophomore Ethan Kessler, an electrical engineering major, reflects on his decision to attend an Ohio State regional campus. Kessler is particularly thankful for the opportunity to adjust to college life in a smaller setting and for the financial relief provided by the Wm. Kay Davis Excellence Scholarship.
The Wm. Kay Davis Excellence Scholarship awards up to $5,000 annually to three incoming honors students. The scholarship is renewable for students who remain at Ohio State Marion and meet academic requirements, including maintaining a high GPA and participating in honors programming.
In addition to the Davis Excellence Scholarship, Ohio State Marion awards $1.1 million in scholarships to students each year. Combined with the lower tuition rates of regional campuses, these scholarships underscore the university’s commitment to access and affordability.
Kessler, a first-generation college student from Upper Sandusky, Ohio, chose Ohio State Marion to ease his transition to college life. “When making my decision, I concluded that Marion would be a better option for my first two years before transitioning to the Columbus campus,” Kessler said. The smaller campus environment allowed him to adjust more comfortably compared to the larger Columbus campus.
Kessler has long dreamed of attending Ohio State. “I have always dreamed of coming to Ohio State ever since I was a little kid. Stepping into that reality last year was a remarkable milestone in my life,” he said.
Despite the challenges of college, Kessler believes the benefits are worth the effort. “As I was often told growing up, anything worth having does not come easy, and that is why I try to work diligently day after day as I pursue my degree,” he said. “There are plenty of opportunities awaiting people in today’s world, but everything depends on how willing someone is to put in the work to achieve them.”
Receiving the Wm. Kay Davis Excellence Scholarship has been a significant recognition of Kessler’s hard work and dedication. In a letter to the donors, Kessler expressed his gratitude: “I am very grateful for this scholarship as it will be put to good use in the effort of helping pay for my college tuition.” He added that the scholarship has alleviated financial pressure, allowing him to focus more on his studies.
Kessler also reflected on the support he has received: “These types of opportunities truly make me look back at everything that has taken place to get to where I am today. I am very grateful for all the opportunities that my heavenly father has given me, along with the people who helped me get to where I am today.”
Those interested in the Wm. Kay Davis Excellence Scholarship should apply to the Ohio State Marion honors program by February 15, 2025. For more information, visit Ohio State Marion Honors Program or email maharry.1@osu.edu.
